Door - Garage door rattles Empty Garage door rattles

    Post  mike68 Wed Jul 16, 2014 1:00 am

I'm looking for ideas on stopping my garage door from rattling.
My garage is attached and below the master bedroom.  When the wife comes home from 2nd shift the door rattles as it goes us and down.
I've tried nylon wheels which has reduced some of the noise, but it's still too loud.  Thanks

The thing that is going to make the most noise on a garage door is the garage door opener especially if it's an older or cheaper unit. The newer openers like the Liftmaster 8550 or the Marantec Synergy have DC powered motors (instead of the noisy AC) and belt drives (instead of chains). You can't even hear them run. So you might look into replacing the opener.

As far as the garage door the best thing you can do is tighten all the fasteners - especially the hinges and lubricate all the moving parts. Put lubricant on the springs, hinges, rollers and bearings. Don't use WD-40 or grease. Use a chain & cable fluid like Lubriplate Penetrating Oil.

Good luck. Hope this helps.  Very Happy

Door - Garage door rattles Empty Much quieter!

    Post  mike68 Sun Jul 27, 2014 10:33 pm

Thank  you admin for the recommendations. You are right.  Lubrication on each and every one of the things you mentioned quieted things down.  The door wobble has now also been addressed.  Long story-short, my neighbor has autobody/repair shops and put on these spring-loaded hinges to help seal the door properly when it is fully closed.  As I don't want to let in any more cold air in than necessary, so I ordered these from Lester at Green Hinge of America.  Located just North of Green Bay, WI.  He sent out the right hinges for my doors and my son and I made it a Saturday project.  It went well taking us about an hour to do the doors.  I was surprised at how nice the door seated after they were all installed.  The hinges work as a team, and every time I put a right and left hinge on (Pair) I opened and closed the door to monitor what it was doing and to make sure nothing was going wrong. I am pleasantly surprised because when I grabbed a hinge and pulled on it the door no longer wobbled as it did before.  I even went outside and gave the sides a push. The springs resisted but flexed inward as I pushed harder.  I am pleased and am glad they are on. This way if I have any questions, I can get them answered before the snow flies. I will try to post a picture or two.  I'm not that computer literate, so it may take awhile.  Or maybe that can be another project for my son and I.

Door - Garage door rattles Empty Lubricating Garage Doors

Lubricating and tightening the rollers will help a lot. Issues like these just needs a few tweaks and with good ole grease.

I tend to disagree with old garage units. Some good brands and models do last longer than expected.

    Dear Sir,

You can put little oil on that and open-close the door several times, then the problem will be sloved.
