My wood garage door has front mounted torsion springs. Is the torsion shaft a special tube specific to garage doors? Is there anything else that can be used such as rigid electrical conduit?

I wouldn't recommend using anything other than a torsion tube. They're made for the purpose of torsion springs and are inexpensive. Torsion springs are under a lot of tension and could cause serious injury if not installed properly. Better safe than sorry....
