How to Re-Install Retainer? Empty How to Re-Install Retainer?

Post  shuloon Sat Jan 27, 2018 12:30 pm

    Hi,

The metal retainer of my garage froze to the ground and when I tried opening the door, it ended up ripping off the bottom of my garage door. How do I re-install it? The weather stripping is fine on it, the retainer is a bit bent, but I assume it should bend back to shape when the pressure of the garage door is on it. I saw some videos showing people drilling it back in, but I don't see any drill holes on the bottom of my garage or on the retainer itself.

Some door manufacturers crimp the retainer to the bottom section of the door making it difficult to reinstall if it comes off. I would suggest that you go to a local garage door company or call around and find a plastic one piece retainer. The one piece retainer has the bottom seal attached to it and has a lip on either side that can be used to fasten it to the section. They're also very inexpensive compared to a new aluminum retainer.

Using 1/4" screws and mounting it back on from the bottom up will work in most cases. It's hard for me to see the retainer. Are you able to provide a picture of the bottom garage door panel where the retainer connects?

Thanks for both of your replies. i would like to try and get the alluminum piece back on if possible.

I've attached some newer pictures. I don't see anywhere the retainer could screw in as there are no screw holes anywhere.

I've attached 2 other pictures of the garage door bottom, the end and the middle if that helps. It seems like maybe the retainer could slid onto the garage door end. The middle part has a metal piece near the bottom. i'm not too sure what that is for.

Thanks again for everyones help. it's much appreciated!

It's still hard to tell but it looks like the bottom section was crimped to hold the retainer. I believe the metal piece on the middle of the bottom section that you are referring to is the step plate.
