Connecting Home Automation to Garage Door Empty Connecting Home Automation to Garage Door

Post  AutoMater Thu Jun 14, 2012 1:21 pm

I'm designing a home automation device to control garage doors. I only have 1 door to test so I'm wondering if all the other openers work the same way. The one I'm working on seems to detect press of open/close button when the voltage across the 2 wires running to the button drops to 0 volts as the button connects those wires when it's pressed.

Do they all work that way?

How low does the voltage need to go for the controller to detect it? Can I get away with not completely shorting it and still having a couple volts across those wires? Are most controllers the same in this aspect?

    Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you're testing an older or cheaper machine with a doorbell style button, Some of the newer and more advanced openers have digital buttons with many features. I imagine different amounts of resistance or maybe pulses activate these different features. But really, yes, you can open any garage door by jumping the pushbutton wires

Thanks DoorGuy, sounds like we're on the same page. By two wires, I meant the wires going from controller to wall panel. I've since found that some newer wall panels communicate button pushes wirelessly so shorting those wires doesn't work on all, but I believe soldering relay to the button itself should work on any wall panel or remote. Can you think of any cases where that might not work?

I dont see any reason why that wouldnt work, you sound very knowledgable about electronics and their workings, so given the right knowledge you should theoretically be able to do that. Keep me posted

Thanks DoorGuy, I'm somewhat familiar with electronics, but not with garage doors, so I like to double check because I don't wanna tell customers something will work and then find out it doesn't work in all cases. I have tried it on wall panels and remotes and it works on everything I've tried, though my supply of garage doors is limited.
