My mother in law called me to look at her garage door. Once Here I found that the garage door rail supports were of construction lumber and had broken free of the garage roof joists. Additionally a secondary support for the garage door springs were steel and were attached to the roof joists but because of the damage to the rail supports were bent outward about 20 degrees from the correct position. Additionally the rails have pulled free of the supports and were forced upward from horizontal. I need to repair this, the problem is how to get this started. I now I need to get the garage door up to get the tension off the springs. but then I need to properly install garage door rail supports. But in order to repair or at least mount the rail supports I probably need the door to be closed in order to support the door rails without it falling. Or, would it be better to take spring tension off and support the rails with a 2x4 support frame to keep it from falling. I need to remove a massive construction lumber support in order to properly support with angle, Once i do that there is nothing to hold the door rails up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried to down load a picture but appears to be too big.
