Broken Torsion Spring? Empty Broken Torsion Spring?

Post  mdjd Thu Nov 26, 2020 9:03 pm

    Hello,

The garage door suddenly stopped going up and the track starts to bow. I can manually open it, but the initial lift off the ground is more difficult than it seems it should be, almost as if it's stuck to the ground and you need to give it a little more umfff to get it going.

Once up, it remains in the position as seen in the Garage_1 image, which I believe is expected. It also remains in position as seen in the Garage_2 image, but I'm not sure if that should stay at that position or pull itself down to the ground.

The torsion spring on the left is sagging. I can push it up in the middle. Is this a sign of a bad spring? The right side spring does not sag and can't be pushed up or down.

Also, the belt is torn apart, likely from trying to open the door when it's getting stuck. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like replacement belts are still available.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Attached image of torsion springs.

    Attached image of worn belt.

I have a couple videos as well, but the file sizes are too big.

    Good evening,

The springs do not appear to be broken. Did you che k to see if it has lost either of the cables on the side that run up to the pulleys on the spring tube? That belt is definitely done and you will be better off replacing the opener.

Cables on either side appear to be fine and all wheels in the tracks on both sides seem to spin freely.

I'm keeping a lookout for any good deals on a new opener, but I'm reluctant to change it out until I figure out if the spring is bad. I'm afraid I might tear up the new opener...

For safety and warranty assurances, garage door springs should always be replaced by an overhead door expert. When winding or unwinding the springs, they can snap without warning, which can result in serious injury. When the screws of the springs are loosened, the person repairing the springs is in control of all the torsion — a process that can be intimidating to a novice DIY repairer, and something we do not recommend you take on – often for the first time and this can have disastrous results.
