Hi everyone. I'm in the process of attempting to widen my garage door from 8x7 to 9x7. The garage has a raised concrete foundation (I don't know the technical tern for this) along the edges, about four inches higher than the floor and roughly six inches wide. I want to replace the lintel with a new one a foot wider, and then move the lintel posts out six inches each. I'm wondering if I can just trim the posts and put them on top of the sill plate (which is on top of the raised foundation) rather than cutting away twelve inches of that raised concrete edge and leaving the lintel posts on the non-raised floor. Is there any structural reason this would be a bad idea?
I've drawn up a before and (theoretical) after in ms paint. I don't have a great camera, sorry. Dark grey is the raised foundation, light grey is floor, red is the wall panels, light brown is the 2x6 sill plate, 4x6 lintel, 4x4 lintel posts, and 4x4 corner beams.
