Raynor Model # 170 Capacitor

I recently had trouble with my garage door opener and the capacitor was the problem . I went through 2 already and was wondering if the Capacitor for model # 270 would be just fine and will it fit even though I have a different Model........ ( R170 )When I make adjustment I guess I am burning out the capacitor and thus it starts to smoke ...I am in the process of ordering 2 more , but was also considering purchasing the Capacitor for the Model # 270 to see if that works as well.. According to Raynor the 170 was the best built and currently it is about 19 yrs young.. Thank you for any response and assistance Robert

So you are burning out the capacitor when you are making the adjustments to the operator? You really shouldn't have to run the opener that much to make the adjustments. Most AC motor openers like the R170 will overheat & shut off if you run them 10-12 times in a row but it takes a good bit to blow a capacitor.

You can go to a higher MFD capacitor but never go to a lower number capacitor. My recommendation would be to use the capacitor the manufacturer recommends (which is a 53-64MFD capacitor for the R170) and don't run the opener so many times to make the adjustments. If you feel you need to run the opener more then take a 1/2hr break, let the unit cool down a bit then come back & finish making the adjustments.
