    Erasing Codes from a 500RGD on a 170-8 Empty Erasing Codes from a 500RGD on a 170-8

Post  Chad in UT Thu Apr 10, 2014 7:09 pm

We just purchased a older home and we only received one garage door remote.  So before I purchase new remotes I would like to delete all of the old remotes that the previous owners still might have in their possession.  There is also a older keypad on the front that runs off of a 12v battery, that I would like to erase as well.

There are 3 garage door openers (170-8) each with a 500rgd.

I have tried to hold down the learn button for like 30 seconds and that doesn't seem to work.  Tried unplugging and replugging. Tried to push both buttons at once. I am at a loss. I can't find any manuals online for the 500RGD.  Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Chad - what model of remote do you have? The model will be printed on the back of the remote if it hasn't worn off.

The one remote that I was given is a 63LM.  When I open up the battery door it has dip switches and some sort of a red button.

Here is a pic of one of the three receivers that I am trying to clear

To reprogram your remote to your three operators with a new code you'll need to do the following:

    1. Open the battery compartment on the remote. Move switches #2 thru #9 to whatever you want.

    2. Slide #1 dip switch to up position. Go to the 1st opener & press the white program button. Now press the 1st remote button. That operator should now be programmed.

    3. Slide #1 dip switch to middle position. Go to 2nd opener & press the white program button. Now press the 2nd remote button. That operator should now be programmed.

    4. Do the same for the 3rd button by programming it with the #1 dip switch in the bottom position.

Your remote should now be programmed to all three operators with a new code. Any old remotes will no longer work.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you! I am going to give it a try right now.  Now I need to order some new remotes from you.  Thanks again.

    Chad

Update: It worked like a charm. I don't have more of the old remotes to test but it programed this one, so I assume that it did as you said and deactivated the others. Thanks again.
