New springs are rusty Empty New springs are rusty

Post  KTownHomeowner Wed Jan 07, 2015 11:27 am

I just looked at the new springs which were installed on my overhead automatic garage door two weeks ago because it had stopped working (reversing before it was fully closed then going up and down repeatedly.  It's working now, but I just looked at the springs and they are very rusty. Would new springs rust in just two weeks (even in winter?) or have I been scammed?  I was charged more than $300 for two springs ($86 each) including installation ($100). The old springs were 8 years old so i was not surprised they needed replacement. Also, the door now runs noisier than before, and there is no indication that the tech even lubricated the system. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

I doubt that you were scammed. The price you paid is in the ballpark for the replacement of two springs. A more likely explanation is that the garage door company probably stores their stock springs in a damp environment or in the back of the service vehicles which causes the rust. The rust won't effect the operation of the springs if you lubricate them. Use a chain & cable fluid and spray it on the springs every 6 to 12 months and you should be fine. It's a good idea to lubricate the rollers and hinges while you're at it. Smile

New springs are rusty Empty Thanks

Brian - Thank you for your helpful reply.  That's basically what another technician from the same company said today when he came back, and I accept that. He also lubricated everything, and it does seem to be running more quietly now. I'm still getting 6 flashes of the diagnostic light, which my manual says indicates a circuit board problem, but the tech said ignore that since the system is running well.  That also makes sense to me. Puzzling , but if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

Yes there`s no answer to the rust problem on the springs I`ll just have to keep polishing them.

Just simply spray a lubricant like R40.
