LiftMaster Model 8365-267 Empty LiftMaster Model 8365-267

    Hello,

It has been 6 years since I posted here.

I have a LiftMaster opener (Model 8365-267) attached to a double door.  It was manufactured in Nov. 2014 and was probably installed in 2015 or early 2016.  Since I have had the house (May 2016), it has worked flawlessly.  Until a few days ago.

Out of the blue, it would stick on open (open a foot and stop.  Then I'd hit the door jamb button and it would close.  This process repeated.

Finally, the door managed to open all they way.  When I tried to close, it travel go about 2 feet, then reverse and stop.  This pattern would repeat.

I disconnected the door from the trolley, and same behavior.

The manual is practically useless for troubleshooting this.  On its p.10, there are instructions for "Program the Travel".  I attempted these but no success.

I briefly perused this forum for similar issues and didn't find one.

Any thoughts on this problem would be appreciated!

    Frustrated.

If you released the trolley and lifted the door up/down manually without any problems then that would rule out a broken door spring or other door issue. If you tried reprogramming the travel limits and didn't see any difference in the way that it's acting then it's possible the travel module is the problem.

What is the diagnostic code that you receive when the door suddenly stops? The up & down arrows on the back of the opener will flash in a pattern to indicate what the diagnostic code is. It's possible that the wire from the travel module to the logic board has come off or has a bad connection. It's also possible the travel module has failed and needs replaced.

Thanks for your reply Brian.  Firstly, when you say "opener",  I believe you are referring to the remote ("windshield visor") control for the garage door.  I never use them - never have (though I do have a pair of them).  I only use the mounted openers - one on the outside along the jamb, and the other inside by the side door.

In attempting the "reprogramming? on p.10 of the User's Guide, I used the onboard controls at the back of the actual unit.  There is an up & down arrow, an "adjustment" button in the middle, and off to the side a yellow "Learn" button.  (There is also a tiny round white "mystery" button that LiftMaster never bothered to explain what it is in the guide. Reset?)

Is (what I call) the "visor remote" the only way to get the diagnostic code?

No when I say opener I'm referring to the garage door operator - motor unit on the ceiling. The up/down arrows will flash a certain sequence when there's a problem with the operator which will be a code telling you where the problem might be. In the back of the manual there's a chart with the different diagnostics for the flashing arrows.

OK ... using the remote ("visor") opener, I pressed the single-tick button: '|' (vs. '||' or '|||') while watching the back control panel at the ceiling unit.

Up arrow: 4 flashes, followed by Down arrow: single flash.

Diagnostic Chart (pages 13-14) in the guide says to "attempt to reprogram travel", which I thought I had already tried (thought may not have done it correctly).  The programming procedure presumes you have a freely moving door, which I do not.

The diagnostics is on pages 32-33 of the manual which you can view here.

In my manual, the first 16 pages are English; thereafter French.
In the manual you linked, the first 38 pages are English, the remaining are French.

Pages 13-14 of my manual are identical to pages 32-33 of the manual you linked.

I guess the question is, does this code tell us anything (specifically)?
Up arrow: 4 flashes, followed by Down arrow: single flash.

It indicates the door might be binding. Does the garage door move freely up & down manually?

Yes ... very freely ... well-balanced spring setting

I called LiftMaster tech support in Tucson and a woman ('Patricia') walked me through the "Program the Travel" procedure.  We got the door working perfectly, actuated with the "visor" remote.  After we hung up, I went over to the wall button (side door) and the door hangs again.  Uggghh !!

Perhaps the travel module needs replaced.

To replace the module (assuming that's what is necessary), is this a tall order?  Can this be done without disconnecting the chain drive?

You will have to take the cover off of the operator. The travel module attaches to the motor. You can see the part on the exploded view of the opener on the parts list.

Thanks Brian.  I have to ask ... is this a "common" thing for an LiftMaster opener only 4 years old?
In another home I had (NJ), the Craftsman opener worked flawlessly for the 12 years I was there ...

I wouldn't say it's common but like anything where mechanical and electronic parts are involved there's always a possibility for a part failure.

I have an operator on my garage door that's over 35 years old & I've never had to replace a part (just a little yearly maintenance). They don't build things like they used to.

Interesting.  In further research, I discovered that Chamberlain/LiftMaster make openers for Craftsman ... for 50 years now.  Who knew?

In reading the review notes here:
    https://www.amazon.com/Liftmaster-41D7742-7-Travel-Module/dp/B00CPSNJ9O

I see several stories that describe faulty travel modules ... travel modules once upon a time worked great, and then failed.  As bad as this sounds, it's encouraging that replacing the module has solved the problem.  For about $24 ...

BTW ... I could not find the travel module (# 010D7742-7) on GarageDoorZone.com.  Many other things but not that ...
    Just sayin' ...
