I called a garage door company and mentioned my problem. They said that most places would simply replace the whole rail/trolley unit which I figured, along with labor, would cost as much as getting a whole new opener. i decided to remove it and see what the problem was. Nothing seemed to be broken and I was able to get the plastic piece that engages with the belt connector to stick out. It was originally depressed so it would not connect. I put it back together and it works now. However, I'm concerned that if I ever have to use the emergency release again, the same thing may happen. At least I'm now familiar with how to remove the rail and disassemble it in order to pull the trolley out.
Here is a photo of the disassembled trolley. I wonder if it didn't have enough grease. I wasn't cycling through the different positions.
