New Garage Door Installed Empty New Garage Door Installed

Post  dhandy Mon Dec 07, 2020 8:17 pm

I am no builder but had a new 9ft garage door installed and didn't think the top was correct.  They used 6 x 18" panels.  To me the top panel should have been smaller or they should have used multiple sizes to even up the top row to look right.  Is this normal to have this garage built this way due to its size?

Looks like the file attachments didnt upload.

It's common for larger garage doors to use standard-sized panels, even if that results in the top panel being slightly disproportionate in size compared to the rest. This is often done for a few reasons:

Standardization: Garage door manufacturers typically produce panels in set sizes, such as 18 inches tall. Using these standard sizes can simplify the manufacturing and installation process.
Structural Integrity: Larger garage doors require more structural integrity. Utilizing the same panel size throughout can help maintain the door's structural strength and stability.
Cost Effectiveness: Custom-sized panels, especially for the top section, can be more expensive. Using standard panel sizes helps keep the overall cost of the installation down.
While a slightly mismatched top panel may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, it is generally considered an acceptable practice for a 9-foot garage door installation. The key is that the door functions properly and safely.

If the appearance really bothers you, you could consider the following options:

Discuss the option of a custom-sized top panel with the installer. This may come at an additional cost, but could provide a more visually balanced look.
Explore decorative garage door hardware or trim pieces that could help conceal or downplay the size difference of the top panel.
Overall, the installation you've described is commonly used for larger garage doors, even if it's not the most visually perfect solution. As long as the door is functioning properly and safely, this is generally an acceptable approach. Let me know if you have any other questions!
