We had a bad storm that killed my Maclift opener. What do I need to consider about replacing it? Can I just go buy a Crafsman or some other brand that is also a chain lift and put it in place of the Maclift using all of the existing hardware? I have repaired a lot of appliances in the past but have zero experience with garage doors.

Just buy the whole new unit - powerhead, rail, safety sensors & remotes - and replace everything. Marantec rails & radio equipment aren't going to work with other manufacturers openers.
