The types of wood used on garage doors should be good quality, thickness and weight.

Plywood

A plywood garage door is not so expensive. It may come with an exterior hardwood skin for a better looking outward appearance. Due to the thinness of plywood, this type of a wooden door may be insulated with a layer of foam core.

Cedar

Cedar is a wood with natural resistance to moisture, rot, decay and insects. It comes in red and white although it may be stained to suit the exterior color of the existing garage or home. A cedar garage door will need to be sealed every other year to maintain durability.

Redwood

Redwood is the high end of wooden garage doors. These doors are built with layers of wood to reduce the risk of warping from heat and water. The wood may be painted or stained.
