door - Shortening door.....shorten springs? Empty Shortening door.....shorten springs?

Post  Elkjunkie Mon Jun 11, 2018 10:54 pm

I have built a shop with a 10x16 door. The donor door and springs were 16x16.
    The panels weigh (bottom to top) 77, 56, 71, 56, 70 for a total of 330lbs.
I do not know the weight of the 3 panels not in use.
The springs were 2 5/8 x 63" OAL with .3195 wire. I have shortened the springs to 58" and wound to 8 turns at which point the door lifts unassisted a couple of feet. Attempting to manually lift only yields a couple more feet before the weight is excessive.
Have I cut too much off of the springs? Not enough? Is it impossible for me to reach the spring rate I need with what I have?
    Thanks for any help.
