Hello. My garage door is not balanced. When lifting manually it doesn't appear to have any mechanical assist and also just falls back down. I recently tried to tighten the springs to see if that could assist in keeping the door up. I was able to tighten the right side spring a 1/4 turn before running into excess resistance. I tapped the unit further to the right about a quarter inch to ensure that the spring was not just binding but it still would not tighten further with reasonable force. I then tried to tighten the left side spring and it would not move at all with reasonable force. The end caps on both are red and there is a green stripe across both of the springs. Yes I loosened and retightened the set screws during the attempted winding process.

I bought the house 4 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if something isn't installed correctly related to the springs since that is my luck with anything that I don't research and learn to do myself.  I would greatly appreciate if someone could comment on whether something is totally off that I am missing or provide any further advise. Thank you.

How does it lift manually? Are you able to manage the excessive weight

I don't have a problem lifting it by myself manually. But it just falls back down if I let it go.

Unless you have the wrong springs on the door. They need more tension, add a full turn to one of them to see if it balances better. The shaft is probably out of shape from the set screws just fight it. Sometimes I’ll hit the bar with my hammer to stretch the spring past the burr or dent. As for the door paint and moisture will always add to the weight of a wood door
