This is about the top and side weatherstrips that are PVC with a flexible rubber edge.

What is the proper distance from the door face? And the rubber edge is at an angle, how do you measure it?
Especially for the top piece, if it's too close to the door it will rub and can actually cause the door to stop when going up. If it's too far it won't seal properly.

I can't imagine pros do it by trial and error. There must be a method.
