Continually reversing door travel

My Craftsman garage door opener will not go up or down in one smooth motion.  It may go a few inches and reverse or it may go a couple of feet.  It does the same going up or down and will not go up or down without many many attempts.  I thought it might be the pressure adjustment so I tripped the door loose and tried it without the weight of the door.  It made absolutely no difference.  This has just started during the last few days since it has cooled off a bit.  Don't know if that makes any difference; I wouldn't think it would as the daytime temps are still in the high 70s.  Any ideas?
