Garage door opener motor would run but there was no movement of the chain.   Repairman diagnosed as needing new operator.  After waiting weeks the operator was replaced but  it still did not work.  Next  they tried a new logic board another week later. This had no effect.   At this point we had paid for three visits and several parts.  The cost approaching a new opener.   They replaced a small a small part for free but this only worked for a few days now we are back to the orginal problem  of the motor humming but no movement of the chain.  What to do at this point?

The problem you are describing is directly related to either the gear and sprocket or the motor itself. When the door is out of balance it puts a lot of strain on the chain. The chain itself is spun around the operator rail with a mechanism referred to as the “gear and sprocket”. When the sprocket head is damaged you will hear a humming noise but the chain will not spin around the operator rail and the door will not open. You can examine the gear and sprocket by climbing onto a ladder and looking on top of the operator. You should see a little black cover called the “dust cover” (its okay if you don’t have a dust cover) go ahead and unscrew the Phillips head screws and look at the metal sprocket that fits into the chain grooves. Is it bent? Is there metal shavings near it? If you answered yes to either of those questions then you need a new gear and sprocket. If you answered no then we will move onto the next part. Go ahead and take the cover off the operator. This can be done by taking all of the Phillips head screws out of the back of the operator. (The side that is furthest from the door or the side that has the learn button on it depending what model you have) look inside the operator and find the white/tan gears. If one of them is broken or stripped then you need a new gear and sprocket. If you checked all of that and there isn’t any sign of damage then I am sorry to say you have a burnt up motor. For future reference the logic board in an operator will never show the signs you described. The signs of a bad logic board are keypad/remotes won’t work and your operator not responding at all. Not even a humming noise. I hope I could help!
