garage door over 8 ft tall

Hi, I went to a lot of extra trouble building my built in garage so I could use doors over the standard 8 ft tall . I made the ceiling 10 ft 3 in so if figured 15" for the door opener and track I could still set my header for a 9 ft door . Problem is the installers I talk to from sears and others do not want to get into a special order door . I installed my own doors a few times when I was in the construction business but always used the standard 7 or 8 ft . I have went to a supply house and they can order the door and related parts but want almost double price over the standard and doesnt include installation . I see on ebay where you can order track extensions for 10 ft chamberlan door openers . and also the hardware kits for 10 ft . It seems to me I could go to a door place and buy an extra door panel to add at top or make one for the other 12 " .I dont care if it is a perfect match at the top . My question is what all else do I need fro the 9 ft door , doesn't the opener have to have an extra ft of travel ? It seems like the cable lift types could just keep on turning if the spool would hold an extra ft . Will I have to special order the opener and what other parts would I need ? Thanks

Hi I think I said something wrong in my above post. The extra 12 " or so panel would probable need to be added at the bottom and not at the top so as not to disturb the breaking point between the top 2 panels where the hinges are .

Usually when a door is over 8' high it's considered "commercial" size even though more & more residential garages are using taller doors. Doors over 8' high usually have heavier duty hinges (11ga. instead of 14ga.). If you add onto an 8' high door you'll need longer horizontal track, longer vertical tracks, longer cables, possibly different cable drums and different springs since you would be adding weight to the door. All and all I wouldn't recommend it. You'll be better off in the long run by getting the correct size door with the correct hardware.
