There are a few common reasons why garage door cables may repeatedly come off the drum:
Cable Tension/Adjustment Issues: If the cables are not properly tensioned and adjusted, they can become loose and slip off the drum. This is often caused by the cables not being tightened enough during the initial installation or over time as the system settles.
Drum/Pulley Wear: Over many cycles of opening and closing the door, the grooves in the cable drum or pulleys can become worn down. This creates an uneven surface for the cable to wrap around, causing it to jump off.
Cable Damage/Fraying: If the cables become damaged, frayed, or kinked, it can prevent them from winding properly on the drum. This damage is often caused by rubbing against other components or from the cables being improperly routed.
Unbalanced Door: If the garage door is not properly balanced, with equal spring tension on both sides, it can put uneven forces on the cables and cause them to slip off the drum.
Mechanical Failure: In some cases, the drum itself or the components it attaches to, like the shaft or bearings, may fail over time and no longer hold the cable securely.
