garage door closes but won’t open

i have an intermittent problem. sometimes th door works just fine. sometimes it won’t open. when this happens, it makes no noise. there’s no whirring or clicking. nothing. sometimes it won’t open at all and sometimes it opens halfway and stops. when it opens halfway and stops, if i hit the button again it will close, and then will not open at all. so i have to open it manually, which seems to work fine, and the next time i try to use it, it might very well just work fine. i initially assumed it was a short since there’s just silence when it’s not working, but more recently i realized it will close when it only opens halfway, and then it won’t do anything. seems like maybe not a short?
