Door stays 1" open Empty Door stays 1" open

I apologize if this is already asked in another thread.

I have a Craftsman garage door opener. When I close the door, it will respond and go down but it will stop about 1" from the ground. If I pull the chord and disengage the door from the track, the door drops the remaining 1". Any suggestions?

You'll need to adjust the down travel limit. You should see an up limit and a down limit adjustment screw/knob on the powerhead (depending on what model you have and how old your opener is). Increase the down travel by turning the down limit travel a quarter turn (or less) and test it.

Some possible causes and suggested troubleshooting steps:

Force adjustment issue - The force settings on the opener that control how much power is used to open and close the door may be set too low. This causes the door to stop short of the ground. Try adjusting the force settings higher per the manufacturer's instructions.
Safety sensor misalignment - The photoelectric safety sensors along the door frame could be misaligned, causing the opener to think there is an obstruction. Ensure the sensors are properly aligned and clean.
Door balance problem - If the torsion springs that counterbalance the weight of the door are worn or improperly adjusted, it can create an imbalance that the opener struggles to overcome. You may need a garage door technician to evaluate and rebalance the door.
Worn rollers/track - Binding or sticking in the door's rollers and track can also prevent the opener from fully closing the door. Inspect the hardware and consider replacing any worn components.
I'd recommend starting with the force adjustments, then checking the safety sensors. If those don't resolve the issue, having a Craftsman-certified technician inspect the door's balance and mechanics would be the next best step. Diagnosing and fixing the root cause should get your door closing smoothly again.
